I'm Louise, the Student Enterprise Careers Consultant within the careers team. My job is to help you, whether you're a current student or a recent alumni, explore if a career working in a freelance, self employed way or starting a business is the right career choice for you. I work with lots of different external programme providers, business start-up supporters and business mentors so I can help build their networks and grow their offer.

This summer is the perfect time to explore your enterprising idea, develop an existing side hustle or take your business to the next level. 

Ways to help make career decisions or to find the information you need might include; attending events, booking a one to one guidance appointment or perhaps being referred to an external provider of business start-up support.

Building networks is also really useful when thinking about future career options and it is extremely important when being freelance or starting a business. It can often feel a bit daunting to get started which is why our sessions over the summer have dedicated time for you to chat with other students and build networks without realising!

Develop Enterprise Workshop

Friday 28th July - City Campus

Wednesday 9th August - Headingley Campus

Develop Enterprise Workshops are a chance to take your idea or skill to the next level. We will be working on your values to help create your value proposition - the anchor of your idea - who your customers are and how to speak to them and how to create your 'shop front'. This workshop is ideal for those who are ready to trade but would like to make sure their offer is ready to launch. Perhaps you have already done some friends and family type freelancing or if you are self-employed or think you might be in the near future. It would also suit those with a business/business idea and want to start trading soon.

The course will be led by Louise and feature experts in social media presence, elevator pitch building and brand creation. It will also include a follow-up one to one with an accountant to ensure your financial plan works and you are confident with how you will manage the money side.

Why you might sign up

  • You have a skill or qualification which you believe you can monetise and manage to work for yourself.
  • You may have already started being freelance or self-employed but want to create a clearer offer and take your idea to the next level.
  • You may have started generating revenue through recommendations and your close circle but now want to increase the reach of your offer.
  • You may want support in making a plan for the next 6/12 months either to increase or maintain trading or to work towards being ready to trade
